Sport: Speedway Racing
In a city like Shepparton where there is lot of motoring enthusiasts, it was not surprising that the sport of Speedway racing greatly increased in popularity during the 1960’s and 70’s, helped along by speedway racing enthusiast Ray Reid with his speedway program on Radio 3SR. Drivers of speedway cars or “hot Rods” as they were often called, formed a local speedway club called the Goulburn Valley Auto club. The club was formed to arrange for speedway racing to have an organised basis with strong rules in place to protect the driver’s wellbeing. The inaugural president of that club was Barry Myers who not only became one of the most successful drivers, but worked tirelessly with other car clubs to ensure their chosen sport was conducted properly. Barry has continued to be involved with the sport and is still a committee member of the GV Auto club after 54 years involvement. He also arranged to have the club involved with Sgt. Eric Montgomery in helping to establish the Driver Education Centre in Shepparton. In the early years of speedway racing in North East of the State, Barry was regarded as the best speedway driver in North Eastern Victoria and in the 1970’s won the highest class of speedway to become the Victorian sprint car champion. He was 4 times North Eastern Zone champion and 6 times GV Auto Club champion. Barry organised events and represented his club to ensure that speedway clubs were aware of the rules and safety standards for events. He was the inaugural recipient of Life Membership of the GV Auto Club, he was inducted as the inaugural GV Auto Club Hall of Fame member and was elevated as a Legend in the club. He did all this whilst operating a successful G.V. business called Automotive Super Balance. Barry Myers will long be recognised for his enthusiasm and hard work to make his sport successful. Tonight that recognition is added by the City of Greater Shepparton as we welcome Barry Myers as a Shepparton Sports Hall of Fame Roll of Honour member.
