Greater Shepparton residents and business owners will have a further three weeks to share their feedback on the proposal to sell the Maude/Nixon and Edward Streets car park in Shepparton, following an extension to the consultation period.
Community members will now have until Monday 28 February 2022 to provide submissions on the proposal, after an extension was agreed upon by Greater Shepparton City Council. Community consultation opened on Friday 14 January 2022.
Council is undertaking consultation to understand the thoughts and concerns of nearby residents and the community regarding the proposal to sell or gift the Council-owned car park for future development as social housing.
It comes after Council received a proposal request from Beyond Housing and Wintringham in late 2021. Both organisations are Registered Housing Associations with long histories of supporting vulnerable members of the community through a range of innovative housing and support services. Upon completion, Council would take back possession of the ground floor car park land, and Beyond Housing and Wintringham would manage the residents’ parking and apartments.
Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe encouraged community members to use this extended consultation timeframe to carefully consider the proposal and provide their feedback.
“We hope this extension provides locals with further time to read the proposal and share their thoughts with us as we understand how important community consultation is,” she said.
“I would like to thank everyone who has provided their feedback so far, and encourage anyone interested to make a submission so we can truly understand the thoughts of the wider community.”
Submissions can be emailed to council@shepparton.vic.gov.au, completed online at shaping.greatershepparton.com.au/ or submitted via post to Greater Shepparton City Council, Locked Bag 1000, Shepparton VIC 3632. Submissions should be titled ‘Notice of Intention to Sell Land – Maude Nixon and Edward Streets Car Park’.
All submissions must be in writing and submitted by 28 February 2022 to be considered by Council. Submitters may also request to be heard by Council in support of their submission at an upcoming Council Meeting.
Council will then consider all submissions including those submitters who wish to be heard, and may decide to sell the land, part of the land or not to sell the land at a future Council Meeting in 2022.
