Greater Shepparton City Council adopted the Universal Access and Inclusion Plan (UAIP) 2022-2026 at the first Council Meeting of the year yesterday.
The purpose of the UAIP is to articulate Council’s priorities for identifying and addressing practices and conditions that might result in discrimination against people with a disability. It also aims to address inclusivity of all people through education, employment and volunteering opportunities while promoting the recognition of the rights of people with a disability.
The UAIP was adopted at the February Council Meeting following extensive consultation with the community and key stakeholders. Mayor, Councillor Kim O’Keeffe thanked everyone who provided their feedback during the consultation period and helped shape the final plan.
“We want to ensure Greater Shepparton is accessible and inclusive to everyone within the community and visitors that come to our region. The plan identifies what we need to do over the next four years to make this happen,” she said.
“The actions of the Universal Access and Inclusion Plan will contribute to the improvement of access and inclusion for all people within Greater Shepparton.”
The actions included in the UAIP will be supported by the Greater Shepparton Disability Advisory Committee (DAC). Recruitment for committee members will begin in the coming week, following the adoption of the DAC Terms of Reference at the February Council Meeting.
The purpose of the DAC is to provide a platform for advocacy and representation on issues relating to people living with a disability in the community, and to support and inform future Council directions. For more information about the DAC and the forthcoming recruitment, please visit Council’s community page.
The UAIP is a strategy of the Council Plan 2021-2025. It aims to address community leadership, social responsibility and wellbeing, and infrastructure to create a vibrant region.
