Greater Shepparton City Council was awarded the Government and Civic Leadership Award (Highly Commended) at the Victorian Multicultural Awards held on Tuesday 18 November, for the St Georges Road Food Festival.
The Victorian Multicultural Awards, coordinated by the Victorian Multicultural Commission on behalf of the Victorian Government, acknowledge the exceptional contributions of individuals and organisations that foster cross-cultural understanding, support migrants and refugees, and celebrate and preserve the diversity of all cultures.
The St Georges Road Festival initiative was started in 2014 and has fast become a highlight of the Greater Shepparton events calendar.
The festival proved popular once again in October 2019, offering those in attendance a taste of the flavours of the world, chances to watch traditional performances and a wide variety of cultural activities.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Cr Seema Abdullah said Council was proud to receive the award.
“We are dedicated to making Greater Shepparton a warm and inclusive community as well as a practical and accessible place to live for people from all backgrounds.
“With more than 14 per cent of our population identifying as being born overseas, we must cater for everyone in our community.
“The St Georges Road Food Festival is just one of many things we do to highlight our multiculturalism and our diversity, and we are so proud it is being recognised.”
