Council awards contract for RiverConnect Route 2 Shared Path Construction

Council has awarded the $1.38 million contract for the RiverConnect Route 2 Shared Path between KidsTown and Gemmill’s Swamp to O’Loughlin Excavations Pty Ltd.
The 2.38 km extension includes drainage works, asphalt path construction, a bridge and boardwalk, signage, and landscaping.
The project is funded through the Victorian Government’s Council Support Package, with Council contributing an additional $264,421.57 to meet the total cost.
Construction is expected to commence shortly and be completed by late March 2026.

The $1.38 million project will deliver a 2.38 kilometre extension of the Yanha Gurtji shared path network, connecting Gemmill’s Swamp to KidsTown.

The contract consists of drainage works, asphalt path construction, bridge and boardwalk installation, and signage.

Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said it was fantastic to be able to award the contract for this project.

“Expanding the shared path network is a priority for Council and the community. This project supports Council’s commitment to improving active transport options and access to outdoor spaces,” he said.

“We hope this extension between Gemmills Swamp and KidsTown encourages community members to get outdoors and utilise our great shared path network right across our region.”

This project is funded by the Victorian Government through Regional Development Victoria’s Council Support Package. The allocated amount to fully fund the project was $991,321. However, following the requirement for additional funding outside of the provided amount, Council approved an additional $264,421.57 to complete the path.

RiverConnect Community Advisory Committee Councillor Representative, Cr Steven Threlfall, McEwen Ward, said the shared path will deliver a range of important features for the community.

“This project is about more than just a path – it will provide safer, more accessible routes for walking and cycling, and includes key elements such as a new bridge, boardwalk, improved drainage, seating, signage, and landscaping,” he said.

Councillor Kieron Eddy, Lower Goulburn Ward, said the project would improve connectivity for the community.

“The RiverConnect shared path extension is an important step in improving connectivity across our region and supporting active transport for all community members,” he said.

Construction is expected to commence shortly, with completion expected in late March 2026.
