Greater Shepparton City Council pledged its support for the Greater Shepparton Seniors Festival in 2020 at the February Ordinary Council Meeting.
The annual Seniors Festival provides Council with an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the contributions of residents aged 60+ in the municipality.
In 2019, the Seniors Festival was held throughout the month of October, with 1900 people attending 32 events in the region.
The event list includes the popular senior’s concert, which attracted 457 people in 2019.
People aged 60+ make up a significant cohort in Greater Shepparton, totalling 23.4 per cent of the population, according to 2016 census data.
Council’s Seniors Festival grant allocation is $5,000, subject to approval through the annual budget process, and is limited to $500 per application.
Council’s support for the festival also includes running Council-funded events and coordination of the program.
“The Seniors Festival has been celebrated since 1982 and was warmly received by senior members of our community again in 2019,” Cr Seema Abdullah said.
“Council is proud to be able to support the festival again in 2020, and is looking forward to seeing many event applications.
“Through its continued support of the Seniors Festival, Council is able to recognise and celebrate the contribution older people have made to our community over many years.”
