Greater Shepparton City Council is pleased to announce the return of its annual Best Start Book Drive, and is reaching out to community members for donations of good quality second hand children’s books.
The drive will be held from Monday 14 August to Wednesday 30 August, during which time donations can be dropped off at the Greater Shepparton City Council offices between 9.00am and 4.00pm, Monday to Friday. The annual initiative will also coincide with the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week, which will run from Saturday 19 August to Friday 25 August.
Best Start is a State Government initiative providing support to families and caregivers of children ranging from birth to six years old. Council’s Best Start Coordinator, Belinda Whitelaw, says a key focus of the program is to foster language and literacy skills among young minds.
“Research consistently shows that reading to children is essential for their language development and future educational success. By giving a second life to your children's board and picture books, you'll not only be helping to declutter your house, but also making a significant contribution to the community and the future of young ones,” Ms Whitelaw said.
“The Best Start program largely relies on a steady donation of children’s board and picture books, so Council look forward to this year's Best Start Book Drive being the most successful one yet.”
Anyone unable to drop off their book donations can arrange for a pick-up by contacting Early Years Project Officer Belinda Schmedje, on 5832 9806 or via email at belinda.schmedje@shepparton.vic.gov.au.
