Greater Shepparton City Council will upgrade and extend the Mooroopna War Memorial after obtaining $50,000 via the State Government’s Victoria Remembers Grant Program.
The extension will commemorate the service of all local soldiers and nurses during WW2 and the Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, Timor and Afghan wars.
Currently the Mooroopna War Memorial only includes names of WW1 veterans and does not acknowledge the contribution of local indigenous people to the defence of Australia.
Council has partnered with the members of the Mooroopna Rotary Club for the project, who have been tirelessly undertaking fundraising to assist with overall cost.
Council Deputy Mayor Cr Shelley Sutton said all local veterans and nurses deserve to be remembered.
“We think this upgrade will increase pride and honour within Mooroopna and the surrounding Greater Shepparton area,” Cr Sutton said.
“Mooroopna is a diverse community and is home to many war veterans and ancestors of people who fought at war. This upgrade will allow families, friends and visitors to gather and remember their ancestors.
“Recognising the indigenous veterans and nurses and their sacrifice is an important aspect to the memorial.”
The memorial site will be extended and panels of DigiGlass will be erected with inscriptions of all war veterans.
Lighting will also be installed and new pathways will be created, enhancing the ambience of the space and allowing for the memorial site to be accessible and safe for all users.
