Greater Shepparton City Council will host several Candidate and Voter Information Sessions over the coming months in the lead up the 2024 Local Government elections on Saturday 26 October.
In Summary
Council will host general community based information sessions in Mooroopna, Tatura and Shepparton for potential candidates to get a better understanding of what the role of a Councillor involves.
These sessions will give insight into the time commitments associated with the position, responsibilities, and general requirements under the Local Government Act 2020. These sessions will also provide information to voters on the new ward structure for Greater Shepparton, which will commence at the 2024 elections.
Last year, an independent electoral structure review panel was appointed to review the electoral structure of Greater Shepparton City Council. As a result of this, Greater Shepparton will be divided into nine wards with one Councillor representing each ward.
Residents will only be able to vote for candidates who have nominated for the ward their voting entitlement relates to. For most voters, this will be the ward they live in. Candidates will also only be able to nominate for one ward.
Council will also be hosting a Women Candidate Information Session in the lead up to the elections. This session will provide a general overview of the role of a Councillor, in addition to exploring perceived barriers and the flexibility available to support all Councillors. Attendees at this session will hear from guest speaker, Member for Shepparton and former Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor and Councillor, Kim O’Keeffe MP.
