Greater Shepparton City Council has welcomed a $20 million election commitment from the Coalition and Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell, for the redevelopment of the Shepparton Sports Stadium into the Shepparton Sports & Events Centre.
Built in the 1970s, Greater Shepparton’s Sports Stadium is outdated and does not meet the growing needs of the region, including more than 150 local sporting clubs with an estimated 15,000 members.
Earlier this month, Council launched its Greater Shepparton Australian Government Priorities 2025/26 document, which highlighted the Shepparton Sports & Events Centre as the number one infrastructure priority project for the region, helping build on Greater Shepparton’s reputation as the sporting capital of regional Victoria.
The new Shepparton Sports & Events Centre will include four multi-use courts with retractable seating for up to 3,000 spectators, a new café/kitchen area, reception, meeting room, office space and changespace facilities. It would improve Council’s ability to attract significant tournaments and events to the region, bringing with it a positive economic boost for local businesses, accommodation and hospitality providers.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, welcomed the election commitment, saying Council alongside the community had been rallying for a redeveloped stadium.
“As our current Federal Member, we asked Sam to back the stadium and we thank him and the Coalition for this important commitment for Greater Shepparton. This commitment reflects the importance of investing in regional communities and supporting the local people who make these towns thrive,” he said.
“The Shepparton Sports & Events Centre is a shovel ready project and one which will greatly improve sporting opportunities for our region’s youth, along with providing further opportunities to attract and host major events.
“This project will be a gamer-changer for Greater Shepparton.”
Council is also seeking an $8 million commitment from the Victorian Government, and will also contribute $4 million to this significant project.
