Greater Shepparton City Council advises the five community geese that had been living on Craigmuir Lake for the past eight years have been relocated, in conjunction with Wildlife Victoria.
Previously, a local resident cared for the geese, feeding them each day and providing them with a safe place to sleep at night.
Sadly, this community member has since passed away, leaving the geese without a home and regular food.
The geese became lost without the care, often wandering away from the dam. In the process of doing so, these geese started causing damage to neighbouring properties and gardens due to the stress of losing their carer, and presented as a real risk to drivers as they would often cross the busy road unexpectedly.
Council’s Rangers organised a trained Wildlife Carer to relocate the geese to a private dam where a new owner will care for them for the remainder of their lives, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the geese, as well as the safety of the community.
These geese have been relocated to Bohollow Wildlife Shelter and have been released into a more than appropriate environment. This will ensure the longevity of the geese, and remove the risk of these geese being accidently injured by passing motorists.
