Greater Shepparton City Council approved the establishment of a LGBTQIA+ Advisory Committee at the March Ordinary Council Meeting. Over the next 12 months, the Committee will support and inform the Council’s directions on behalf of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Council is seeking expression of interest from the Greater Shepparton community to be involved in supporting the rights and aspirations of all community members regardless of their culture, faith, gender identity, biological sex characteristics, sexual orientation and linguistic diversity.
The Committee will further strengthen the avenues for advocacy and visibility of the Greater Shepparton LGBTQIA+ community. The establishment of a committee will look to reinforce Council’s commitment to creating opportunities for inclusive and equitable practise and valuing the contributions of our LGBTQIA+ community.
“It’s really great that Greater Shepparton City Council are building these relationships and implementing a positive change that acknowledges equal rights within the LGBTQIA+ community. The Committee will be able to provide guidance to Council on how to implement state level initiatives as well as provide inclusive practices across Council that will be beneficial to the community.” Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said.
Community members will be initially appointed for a twelve month period and will play a crucial role in establishing the ongoing representative body within Council that is reflective of the needs of Greater Shepparton’s LGBTQIA+ community.
Nominations for appointment to the Committee must be received by 5pm Monday 31 May.
