Free sessions to tackle elder abuse in Greater Shepparton this June

Greater Shepparton residents are invited to attend a series of free community sessions this June to better understand and prevent elder abuse, as part of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be observed on Monday 15 June 2026 and is recognised internationally as an opportunity for communities to stand together against the abuse, mistreatment and neglect of older people.

To mark the day, Council will light up key landmarks purple, including the Monash Park gum tree, Eastbank and the Mooroopna Water Tower, helping raise awareness of elder abuse and the importance of protecting the rights, dignity and wellbeing of older people.

Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said the sessions aimed to help older residents stay informed, connected and supported.

“Every older person deserves to feel safe, respected and valued in our community,” he said.

“These sessions provide practical information and support while helping raise awareness of an issue that can often go unnoticed.

“By bringing people together and connecting residents with local support services, we can help older people better understand their rights and where to seek help if needed.”

Elder abuse can take many forms including financial, emotional, psychological, physical, sexual and social abuse. It can occur once or repeatedly and is most commonly carried out by someone known to the older person, including adult children, family members or friends.

According to national research, 14.8 per cent of Australians aged 65 years and over experienced at least one recognised form of elder abuse over a 12-month period. This equates to an estimated 160,000 older Victorians experiencing elder abuse each year.

The sessions will include guest speakers, practical advice on recognising elder abuse, and information on local support services.

Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided at each session.

Community members aged 65 years and above, carers, family members and support people are encouraged to attend the following free sessions:
