The Greater Shepparton community is encouraged to provide their thoughts and suggestions on the future of play spaces in Greater Shepparton, after Council released the draft Play Space Strategy 2020-2030 for public exhibition today.
Council will seek feedback from the community for a period of six weeks, commencing today 26 October 2020 and concluding on 7 December 2020.
The new draft strategy is a revitalised version of the previous Playground Provision Strategy 2006-2018, however it now approaches play spaces holistically, including associated items at playgrounds such as shade and seating.
The draft strategy sets a vision for how Council, and the Greater Shepparton community, want play spaces to look in the municipality in the future. The strategy will outline the actions required to achieve that vision, and provide a long-term goal for how play spaces will be developed, upgraded, managed and maintained.
The draft strategy includes an analysis of where play spaces should be situated in Greater Shepparton, what they should include, which age groups they should target, and access and improvement opportunities of existing play spaces in Greater Shepparton.
The number of play spaces spread across Greater Shepparton has increased in the past 15 years from 64 to 88, highlighting Council’s commitment to play spaces in the municipality.
“Greater Shepparton is home to some magnificent play spaces, stretching to every corner in the municipality,” Council Director Infrastructure Phil Hoare said.
“These spaces encompass far more than just the play equipment, and this new draft strategy identifies this change, taking in the whole of the play space including shade and seating.
“Our aim is to provide play spaces that cater for all community needs and age groups, and we hope the community take this chance to help shape play spaces in Greater Shepparton.”
The draft Strategy does not cover private facilities, specific areas such as skate parks, organised sporting venues, bike tracks and outdoor fitness equipment and the like.
