The month of February will see some of the world’s and nation’s most prestigious cycling events occur in Greater Shepparton and to celebrate, Greater Shepparton City Council will be hosting a food festival.
Bikes and Bites will be taking over Victoria Park Lake on Saturday February 1 from 5pm to 10pm to welcome the visitors of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup that weekend and the future presence of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour on February 5.
Bikes and Bites will be showcasing the best of the region said Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Councillor Seema Abdullah.
“We are proud to see our state-of-the-art facilities attract world class events to our region. This is an unbelievable opportunity for our local sports clubs to work with professionals of international caliber and an even greater opportunity for our residents to experience these events in their own home town,” Cr Abdullah said.
“Bikes and Bites will be an event for everyone in the community to enjoy by the picturesque site of the lake.”
Residents and visitors will be able to taste an assortment of dishes and flavours with a convoy of food trucks parked at the lake.
There will be a number of free activities for all ages and abilities to enjoy.
“Bring your bathers because we will be activating the lake precinct with waterslides and stand up paddle boarding as well as some favourite activities on land such as a jumping castle, pedal go karts and lawn games,” Cr Abdullah said.
Some of Australia’s best skaters, scooters and BMX riders will be shredding up the skate park with freestyle demonstrations. Head down and improve your skills as they will be offering free coaching and giving away prizes on the day.
The evening’s entertainment will see local artists take to the stage to perform throughout the night.
Returning to Bikes and Bites will be the community creative display Art Bikes. Featured at last year’s BMX Australia National Championships, Art Bikes is a collection of decorated bikes and included a batman inspired creation, a yarn bombed bike and a Mad Max themed bike.
“The art bikes was a great initiative to get the community and local businesses involved with last year’s National competition and this year it has inspired our locals again to be involved in the cycling celebrations,” Cr Abdullah said.
Locals and visitors are also encouraged to visit the Shepparton Motor Museum who is exhibiting a special BMX hall of fame display as well as Stellar Coffee in Wyndham Street who will be showcasing a range of unique vintage bikes.
Greater Shepparton City Council would like to thank the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund and the Victorian Government’s Significant Sporting Events Program and Regional Event Fund for supporting the Bikes and Bites event to create further visitation and economic stimulation to the region.
