Greater Shepparton City Council is excited to introduce the new green compostable bags to be distributed across the municipality throughout February 2024.
Residents can now expect to receive their next complimentary roll of compostable bags to be used in the kitchen caddy, delivered to all households with a green lid bin.
Council advise community members to look out for the new green compostable bags, as well as the purple ones. Some residents might still receive a roll of purple bags, both green and purple can be used equally to place food waste into the green lid bin.
Since the rollout in 2016, residents have demonstrated a commitment to improving waste management including sorting and placing waste in the appropriate bin. With this support, Greater Shepparton City Council have achieved great results for diverting waste from landfill.
Council’s Director Infrastructure, Gary Randhawa, acknowledged the great work the community has done to help reduce waste to landfill. With the roll out of the bin collection frequency changes last year, appropriate disposal of waste in the kerbside bin system becomes a major focus for the region.
“The delivery of compostable bags has significantly contributed to the success of composting in our municipality. Composted material improves the health and productivity of soil whilst importantly contributes to removing organic material from landfill.”
Mr Randhawa said the compostable bags meet strict Australian standards and are specifically designed to break down in the composting process.
“Please only use these Council provided bags in your kitchen caddy and green lid bin. Keeping contamination low is important as it ensures we fully reap the benefits of the service,” he said.
“Changing the colour of the compostable bags from purple to green, will make it easier for people to identify where this item goes, green bag into the green lid bin. I encourage residents to keep up the good work and help us work together to reduce waste to landfill and protect our environment.”
Council invites residents who don’t have a complementary kitchen caddy and wish to acquire one, to head down to Greater Shepparton City Council at 90 Welsford Street, Shepparton and request one at Customer Service.
If you do not receive your complimentary roll of bags by the end of February please contact Council’s Customer Service team on (03) 5832 9700 or email council@shepparton.vic.gov.au
