Tatura artist Rachel Doller has brightened up the newly installed public toilets at Lake Bartlett in Tatura with a colourful mural designed by local students.
Tatura was selected for the construction of a new public toilet facility as part of Greater Shepparton City Council’s Public Toilet Renewal Program. Members of the Tatura Community Planning Committee were interested in utilising the outer walls of the public toilet, which was installed earlier this year, to develop an art mural that was unique to the town.
The Committee received funding through Council’s Community Planning Implementation Fund to support Rachel to paint the mural, collaborating with senior students from Sacred Heart School Tatura and Tatura Primary School to come up with a design. Focusing on the themes of earth, sun and water and using the natural environment of Lake Bartlett as inspiration, the students used colour, shape and pattern to express their ideas which Rachel then used to pull together the final design.
“The finished product is a mural by Tatura’s young people creating lasting connections to the local environment and the town,” Mayor, Cr Shane Sali said.
“Council were pleased to be able to work with Rachel Doller on this project. Rachel is a passionate Tatura resident and member of the Tatura Community Planning Arts Sub-committee and generously donated her time and skills to see this project come to life.”
Cr Sali said he hoped residents and visitors to Tatura appreciated the time and effort which has gone into the mural to liven up an otherwise simple building.
“Council believe the art mural will activate the area around Lake Bartlett and Charlie Taylor Park, which has been a long held desire of the Tatura Community Planning Committee,” he said.
“Public art adds enormous value to the cultural, visual and economic longevity of a community. This new mural adds to the growing list of murals painted across Greater Shepparton which work to revitalise the area and create local identity and significance.”
