Next week is National Recycling Week! Starting Monday 8 November and ending Sunday 14 November, National Recycling Week is a great reminder of the importance of doing the right thing with your waste. It’s also an awesome opportunity to make small changes in our everyday lives that have the ability to collectively make a huge difference on our environment.
A recent kerbside bin audit conducted by Greater Shepparton City Council demonstrated that we as a community still have some work to do when it comes to sorting our waste correctly. For example, more than half of the landfill bins content was food/garden waste. This waste stream creates a potent greenhouse gas (methane) when sent to landfill, which is why it’s so important that it goes in the green lid bin so that it can be sent back to earth as a compost.
The recycle bin was also highly contaminated with waste meant for the landfill bin. It is essential that plastic bags are separated from your recyclable items. They belong in either your landfill bin, or in a soft plastics bin at your local supermarket.
During National Recycling Week, keep an eye on Council’s social media channels. Council will be posting regularly about results from the kerbside bin audit, and providing handy tips, tricks and reminders on how to keep recyclable resources out of landfill.
Greater Shepparton City Council Manger Waste Services, Courtney Naughton encourages the community to take an active role in this year’s National Recycling Week.
“There are heaps of ways we can all reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill, be that by remembering your reusable coffee cup when you head to your favourite café, investing in some cloth nappies for your baby or refurbishing an old piece of furniture instead of buying one brand new.
“Feel proud of every effort you make, no matter how insignificant it may seem,” she said
