Greater Shepparton City Council reminds residents the extended deadline for pool and spa registrations in Victoria is coming up on 1 November 2020.
In December 2019, the State Government introduced new regulations that all owners of a pool or spa that is capable of holding more than 300 mm (30 cm) of water must register it with their local Council in an effort to lower the risk of drownings in the state.
Due to the impacts of COVID-19, the State Government announced an extension of the original 1 June 2020 deadline to 1 November 2020.
Council thanks all residents who have taken the time to register their pool or spa, and reminds those that have already registered they do not need to do so again.
Under the extension, the registration process has not changed.
Owners are still required to register their pools and spas with their local council with a one-off fee of up to $79.
Once registration is complete, Council will inform the pool owner of the date by which they must organise their first inspection and certification of their barrier, and then owners must have a registered building surveyor or inspector certify the continuing compliance of their safety barrier every four years.
Inspection and certification are not due by 1 November 2020, only registration is.
Owners who fail to register their pool or spa with their council by 1 November 2020 may face an on-the-spot fine of up to $1652.20.
Council has a step-by-step guide to registering your pool or spa online here. You will also find more information including Frequently Asked Questions.
Owners should be aware that any alteration to an existing pool or spa barrier before or after registration will require a building permit. Lodge a building permit application on Council online website here.
If you wish to speak to a Council employee about your registration, please call 5832 9700.
