RiverConnect’s Nurture Nature activity day will be held on Tuesday 21 January, inviting members of the community, families and kids on holidays to Kidstown to create needed supplies for wildlife carers in bushfire affected areas.
Partner organisations, Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, Goulburn Murray Landcare Network, Shepparton Mooroopna Urban Landcare Group, Goulburn Valley Water and Parks Victoria, as well as the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project will host activities including sewing and knitting wildlife pouches and nests, making freezable food balls and nest boxes and hollows. Members of the recently formed ‘Animal Rescue Craft Group – Goulburn Valley’ will lead the crafting activities.
Those with a keen interest in knitting, crocheting and sewing are encouraged to join the day and bring their sewing machines along, as well as those who are interested in helping out. Those with no experience will have the opportunity to learn some skills from experienced sewers and knitters, making a great activity for the kids.
Manager of Environment Greg McKenzie says that it is a great initiative for the community that will help rehabilitate and treat wildlife that are already injured, as well as create much needed supplies.
“Nurture Nature will provide members of the community with the opportunity to support and assist with the preservation and recovery of injured wildlife. Aside from the activities on the day, we will also have local Wildlife Carers who can chat with participants about the difficulties of treating injured animals in bushfire affected areas.”
“We are welcoming any donations of old sheets or material (wool or cotton); and we encourage kids to bring along one of their old pillow cases to turn into their very own special gift for an injured animal.”
RSVP’s are essential. Please RSVP to RiverConnect Education Officer Allison on 5832 9493. If you’re unable to attend but would still like to contribute, please contact Allison to see what other activities are being organised.
Date: Tuesday 21 January
Time: 9.30am start
Location: Kidstown
Booking: Free event – RSVP to Allison from RiverConnect on 5832 9493. Morning tea is provided.
