Council welcomes a jointly funded upgrade to the Goulburn Valley Highway and Cemetery Road intersection in Kialla West, which will deliver improved safety for motorists and families travelling to and from school.
The Australian and Victorian Governments are partnering with Greater Shepparton City Council to deliver the project, with a total investment of $4.55 million through the Road Safety Program. The Australian and Victorian Governments are contributing equally, with Council providing an additional $812,000.
The upgrade will respond to increased traffic movements in the area and support the safety of the growing Kialla West community, including students attending Kialla West Primary School and the future kindergarten adjacent to the site.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Shane Sali said the project would provide safer and more reliable crossing points for the community.
He added that improving pedestrian safety along the highway is a key priority for Council.
Works will include the installation of traffic lights at the intersection, replacing the existing school crossing and improving visibility and safety for pedestrians crossing the highway.
Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain said the investment reflects a commitment to safer local infrastructure.
The project will also improve turning movements to and from Cemetery Road, enhancing safety for drivers travelling through the intersection.
Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain said the investment reflects a commitment to safer local infrastructure.
As part of the upgrade, student pick-up and drop-off zones and school bus services will be relocated to Cemetery Road, allowing students to board and exit vehicles away from the highway.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said the upgrade would improve safety for both pedestrians and motorists using the intersection.
She also acknowledged Council’s role in advocating for the project and highlighted the importance of the works along a high-traffic corridor.
The cul-de-sac at the eastern end of Cemetery Road will be expanded to enable safer vehicle turning movements, with additional improvements including new footpaths and upgrades to surrounding infrastructure.
Senator for Victoria Jana Stewart said the project would address safety concerns for the local community.
State Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the upgrade would support safer daily travel for local families.
Construction timing will be confirmed in the coming months.
