The campaign, developed in partnership with the Australian Automobile Association, assessed nearly 20,000 kilometres of regional roads across Victoria, identifying those with the greatest safety concerns based on crash history, road conditions and design.
The Echuca Road and Murray Valley Highway corridor, which links Mooroopna to Echuca, was among those highlighted. The road network, managed by Transport Victoria, plays a critical role in connecting communities, supporting freight movement between the towns and enabling regional growth.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said the findings reinforce the importance of prioritising investment along key regional transport routes.
“The Echuca Road and Murray Valley Highway corridor is a vital link for our region, supporting significant freight movement, commuter traffic and connections between major centres,” he said.
“The RACV campaign highlights the safety challenges facing major regional roads like this one, and why sustained investment from the State Government is so important.”
RACV has highlighted that more than half of Victoria’s road trauma occurs on regional roads and is calling for increased investment to lift safety standards, including improving road ratings to at least three stars.
Cr Sali said the campaign helps build momentum for upgrades along corridors that are critical to regional economies and communities.
“Improving safety along major routes is essential to reducing road trauma and ensuring these roads can continue to support the growing traffic demands,” he said.
While the campaign focuses on the broader road network, it also strengthens Council’s ongoing advocacy for targeted improvements at known local pressure points, including the Midland Highway/McLennan Street and Echuca Road/Toolamba Road intersection in Mooroopna.
“Addressing high-risk corridors is essential, but so too is investing in key intersections like the Echuca Road and Midland Highway intersection, where local conditions can create significant safety hazards,” Cr Sali said.
“This intersection forms part of the wider Echuca Road and Midland Highway corridor and highlights how broader road safety issues can be experienced at a local level.”
Council is encouraging residents to take part in RACV’s survey to help highlight priorities for future road investment.
“We encourage our community to have their say and support safer roads across the region,” he said.
“Community feedback plays a powerful role in strengthening advocacy efforts and securing the investment needed to improve safety outcomes.”
Community members can provide feedback or nominate roads requiring urgent attention via the RACV survey before Friday 17 July at racv.com.au/haveyoursay
