Greater Shepparton City Council has noted the awarding of contracts for the upgrade of two major intersections in Shepparton to improve safety and traffic flow for commuters, pedestrians and cyclists at the September Council Meeting.
The works will be conducted at the Wheeler Street and New Dookie Road intersection and Stage 4 of the Welsford Street upgrade.
The Wheeler Street and New Dookie Road Intersection contract was awarded to Jarvis Delahey Contractors Pty Ltd and will be upgraded to a signalised “T”-intersection. The construction works will include full depth reconstructed road pavement designed for heavy vehicle traffic, dedicated slip and turning lanes, traffic signals and controlled pedestrian crossing, with extension to the shared path network.
The project will also require relocation of power assets, replacement of water main and telecommunication protection works to be undertaken.
The project is 50/50 joint funded by Council and the Federal Government’s ‘Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity program’, with a contribution of $835,000 ex. GST. The total project cost is $1,670,000. Works are expected to commence in November with completion early 2023.
There will be partial lane closures for the duration of the works, with temporary traffic lights in place to control traffic flow and delays in travel times are expected to occur. Road users are asked to give consideration to these upcoming roadworks when planning their travel through the intersection.
The second contract was awarded to Apex Earthworks Pty Ltd and is for Stage 4 of the Welsford Street upgrade, from the north of Fryers Street to the north of High Street. Construction will commence by late 2022 and is expected to take four months to complete.
The works will include duplication of the right turning lane from Welsford to Fryers Street heading west, modifications to the Marungi Street and Fryers Street intersection, pavement upgrades to all approaches along the Welsford Street and Fryers Street intersection, and upgrade to the traffic signals.
The works are designed to improve traffic flow along Welsford Street, and will result in better traffic movement.
“Council is pleased to award both of these major projects to local companies and we are excited to see the works get underway,” Mayor, Cr Shane Sali said.
“The Wheeler Street and New Dookie Road intersection upgrade is particularly important given the heavy vehicles which use this intersection every day. This upgrade will provide ease of use for these heavy vehicles, while beautifying the area and providing a safer road environment.”
Council will provide regular updates as both of the projects get underway. If you would like to be on the email list to receive these updates, please visit our major projects page and check the boxes for the relevant e-newsletter.
