In commemoration of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Greater Shepparton City Council will paint the night purple on Saturday 15 June by lighting up Riverlinks Eastbank, the Mooroopna Water Tower and the big gum tree in Monash Park.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day gives the world a chance to acknowledge and voice its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted on the elderly.
Purple lights are used on 15 June around the world in an attempt to generate conversation on this abuse and neglect in the community.
In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the Greater Shepparton Positive Ageing Advisory Committee will have an information stand at the Market Place Food Court, 110 Benalla Road Shepparton from 11am-1pm on Friday 14 June 2019. The committee will also have copies of the updated Confident Living Booklet available.
The Confident Living Booklet is aimed at people 65+ years, along with their carers and families. The booklet provides information ranging from basic household safety tips through to the type of services aimed at assisting ageing people in the community.
Council Mayor Cr Kim O’Keeffe noted Council will also be running a number of activities with the Planned Activity Groups in the days leading up to 15 June.
“This day is a time to celebrate and value the contributions and achievements of the elders in our communities,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
“Council aims to educate and promote respect for everyone, endeavouring to help prevent elder abuse.”
Seniors Rights Victoria provides information, support, advice and education to help prevent elder abuse and safeguard the rights, dignity and independence of the elderly.
