Greater Shepparton City Council will begin work on the Wyndham Street Intersection on today. The upgrade will increase the safety of one of the municipality’s busiest intersections, with the installation of traffic lights at the Wyndham Street/Railway Line/McIntosh Street/Hassett Street and Fitzjohn Street intersection.
As well as the installation of traffic lights, the works also include replacement of the kerb and channel along the frontage of Victoria Park Lake and widening of parking lanes between the railway line and Sobraon Street. It is anticipated these works will take approximately five weeks to complete.
Council’s Director Infrastructure Phil Hoare said “Local civil business Apex Earthworths were awarded the contract to undertake the works at Council’s September Ordinary Council Meeting. The upgrade will involve converting the intersection to a signalised intersection and will cater for the existing railway line crossing, the Caravan Park and the new Shepparton Art Museum entrances. Importantly the works also address the narrow parking lane on Wyndham Street adjacent to the Victoria Park Lake, improving safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,” Mr Hoare said.
“It is anticipated that the works will be completed early in the New Year and will provide a much needed safety improvement at this location for all road users and pedestrians. The undergrounding of some power lines will also improve the amenity of this area. Whilst we understand there will be significant disruption to traffic flow during these works, we look forward to the cooperation of the community to ensure that the works are undertaken safely,” said Mr Hoare.
In conjunction with Council’s works, VLine will be completing level crossing renewal works between Tuesday 13 October to Sunday 18 October, including a complete road closure of Wyndham Street at the railway crossing from 9pm Friday 16 October until 9am Sunday 18 October. Motorists can expect some delays associated with those works and detours will be in place during the road closure.
Motorists are also requested to pay attention to all worksite and advisory signage including traffic controllers. Council asks for residents and motorists to take care and be aware of traffic detours.
