Greater Shepparton City Council, in partnership with the Furphy Foundation, La Trobe University and Goulburn Valley Libraries, is encouraging writers from across the Goulburn Valley to use these school holidays to prepare their entries for the 2026 Furphy Literary Awards.
The awards, which celebrate storytelling’s vital role in Australian culture, have a long history of inspiring young people to share their imagination and creativity through writing.
With submissions open for both junior and youth categories, there has never been a better time for young people to sharpen their writing skills.
Categories include Junior Short Story and Junior Poetry for writers aged 12 years and under, and Youth Short Story and Youth Poetry for writers aged 13 to 17 years.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali said the awards continue to support creativity and storytelling across the region.
“The Furphy Literary Awards give young people the chance to express themselves and share their stories with a wider audience,” he said.
Prizes are available in each category, with first place receiving $300, second place $100 and third place $50.
