It's important to be aware of the dangers of severe weather and learn some simple, useful ways you can take responsibility for your own safety and that of your property.
Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) respond to around 20,000 requests for assistance as a result of storms each year. Much of the damage has been the result of tree branches, trampolines, outdoor furniture or other loose items such as roof tiles becoming flying projectiles in strong winds. Flooding due to blocked drains, cars damaged while parked under trees and falling overhanging branches are some of the other major causes of preventable damage during a storm.

What are you going to do?
You can handle any emergency better if you are prepared! Emergencies can be hard to predict and emergency services may be unable to reach you in a disaster. Gather and store items ready to support you and your family for 72 hours.
- Check that loose items are secured (outdoor furniture, trampolines).
- Check that gutters, down-pipes and drains for blockages if safe to do so.
- Relocate vehicles away from trees.
- Prepare an Emergency Plan or Kit.
Respond
- Stay indoors and away from windows.
- If outdoors, shelter away from drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
- Be prepared for power outages.
- Floodwater is dangerous - never drive, walk or ride through floodwater.
- Floodwater is toxic - never play or swim in floodwater.
Recover
- Check your home and property for damage.
- Keep clear of damaged building, power lines and trees.
- Be aware of road hazards such as floodwater, debris and damaged roads or bridges.
- Do not drive through affected areas unless it is necessary.
